NBA history
The NBA was founded in 1946. In its first version, the league was called the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and had 11 teams: Boston Celtics, Chicago Stags, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, New York Knickerbockers, Philadelphia Warriors, Pittsburgh Ironmen , Providence Steamrollers, St. Louis Bombers, Toronto Huskies and Washington Capitols.

The first game in NBA history was played on November 1, 1946 in Ontario, Canada, between the Toronto Huskies and the New York Knicks. The first league champions were the Philadelphia Warriors with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Stags in the decisive series.

It wasn’t until 1949 that the league was renamed the National Basketball Association (NBA). BBA takes over teams from another US basketball league, the National Basketball League (NBL).
The new league had 17 franchises, but the number of participants was reduced to 8 in the 1953/1954 season: New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Warriors, Minneapolis Lakers, Rochester Royals, Fort Wayne Pistons, Tri-Cities Blackhawks, and Syracuse Nationals. All of these franchises remain in the NBA, although only the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics remain at the same headquarters.
During the following decades, the NBA went through phases of expansion until reaching its current format in 30 franchises.
